My Volvo has been going strong since my family purchased in late 2003. I personally have had it since 2007, and it hasn't failed me since. The overall styling of the car has kept it relevant even now. It is customizable with body kits that you can purchase to help make it look and feel more like your own. As long as the services are up to date, it can perform like new even though it's over 10 years old. It does very well on gas mileage, and the power steering allows you to have relaxed control as you drive (i.e. not fighting the wheel to maintain your lane, which is good for long haul drives).
Story
I was able to successfully back it out of a very steep, unpaved driveway. I thought the poor thing would get stuck in a certain spot, but I was able to gun it back and get out successfully. For not being a sports car or a truck/jeep, it handled that little off-road challenge like a beauty.
Pros
It is extremely reliable, and I have been able to use it for trips to the beach, Home Depot runs for supplies (like wood and other tools), as well as transporting tents. Part of the back seat can lay down so you can position long items in the car for transport. I absolutely love that it was able to take a spoiler. That helped make it distinguishable especially when you come across similar colored cars. It does very well whenever the maintenance is done regularly, and can handle some rough roads (even though it doesn't look like it).
Cons
The biggest issue I have run into is with servicing and simple tasks like bulb replacement. Because the car is Swedish, you have to take it to individuals who specialize in Volvos or other European cars. A lot of your standard auto places will complain about the car being different and give you a tough time about doing things for it. Low beam bulb replacement is a huge issue. I taught myself how to replace my headlights simply because certain places would constantly complain about getting their hands in there to do it and instead try to charge you over $100 to remove a piece that isn't... My vehicle is a 2004 Volvo S60R. This car is a concealed power house of a car with a 2.5 liter 5-cylinder turbo engine. This car goes 0-60 in just 5.5 seconds and is a real treat to drive. The inside of the car feels luxurious and the shape of the steering wheel makes you feel connected. I like how well the car responds to actions and the active chassis settings which allow you to go from “comfort” mode to “advanced” mode with a touch of a button. The leather inside the car doesn’t feel over-done or cheap. Good thought and engineering was put into the design of the car and the placement of the controls all feel intuitive. The brakes are extremely responsive and even though the car can seat four people the car doesn’t feel heavy driving it. The car is stylish, slick and sexy and is a he... (more)
Story
A co-worker has a Ford Focus ST and he kept bragging about how fast his car was. I was getting sick and tired of listening to his stories and he finally struck a nerve when he said that he could take anyone at the office. I decided to challenge him to a drag race at the local drag strip. He accepted and that Friday after work we met at the track. In the quarter mile, I destroyed him with a 13.... (more)
Pros
I like the engine size which is a 2.5 liter 5-cylinder turbo engine which allows this car to provide 300hp. The active chassis settings feature allows me to go from "comfort" to "advanced" with just a push of a button. I can disable traction control with just a push of a button so its full control can be attained at any moment. This car has a huge trunk that provides a large amount of space for all your club store purchases. The seats in the car are soft and comfortable, which I would compare to a La-Z-Boy. Working on this vehicle mechanically is very easy which allows weekend gearheads li... (more)
Cons
The cost of maintenance is high, and parts aren't cheap. The inside of the car is starting to deteriorate. The center console is broken and has now given way. The factory HU-613 stereo is horrible, and replacing it can be a real mess. The brakes squeal loudly, and can be heard from a couple of blocks away. I was told by my dealer that this is normal, but a kit can be purchase to "upgrade" this feature and make it less noisy.
