The Mazda MX5 Miata, though not inexpensive when purchased new, can indeed be the ultimate "Poor Man's" sports car. While it may not be able to compete with more powerful cars, like the Corvette, when it comes to horsepower and speed, or with exotic cars like Ferrari, BMW or Porsche, for pure driving fun, it can not be beat. Older cars, such as my 1999 model, can be had for very little money, and if well taken care of, can still provide many more years of driving fun. I bought mine from a lady who was the car's original owner. She took very good care of the car, and it looks almost new, even though it is 18 years old.
Story
I fly RC model aircraft and was looking for an SUV. I had a Miata before and loved the car, so when I found one for sale I could afford to pay cash for, I bought it and quit looking for an SUV. While it is not good for hauling my planes, I can still manage. One of my largest planes will fit by removing the wing and placing it nose down in the passenger side floor. It is surprising to peopl... (more)
Pros
The Miata, when bought used, is really super cheap. It is economical to maintain and a blast to drive.
Cons
It is small. It won't haul cargo like an SUV, but it's not designed to. You do pay a price for quick handling. It is fun driving little "street-legal go cart" in that it is somewhat hard to enter and exit. One side note, though I owned a 1990 Miata some years ago, I still did considerable research before deciding to buy this 1999 model. I found out that many consider the Miata a "girly" car. This is actually one thing that keeps the price of used ones down! And it is total baloney! Of all the Miata's I see on the road, most are driven by men. They are not super high powered cars, b... The Mazda Miata is an adorable convertible that is great for living in Southern California. It has a small engine, but it also doesn't weigh much so it doesn't take much power to get it up to higher speeds. It is a two seater vehicle with great reliability and is extremely easy to maintain. It has very old technology. It handles extremely well and is especially good at tackling winding hill roads.
Story
When I first bought my car, I took my boyfriend up the coast of California. I got to really enjoy my car for it's purpose.
Pros
I love this car because it gets great mileage (approximately 30 miles/gallon). It is also extremely aesthetically pleasing, with soft rounded edges and a sporty look. It is a convertible, so I can enjoy the sunshine when I am driving in it. I also love it because it is so small and fits into many parking spaces that most cars could not. I also love my car because it is extremely well-made and reliable. It was also extremely inexpensive but comes with almost all of the benefits of other, more expensive sports cars.
Cons
My car only has two seats so I can only ever drive one friend around at a time. It also has a very small trunk so I can only purchase a few groceries at a time. Although I love how small the car is, it is a hazard on the freeway because larger vehicles cannot see it in their blind spots. I have to be a defensive driver all of the time. It is very low to the ground and hard to get into, I have to literally crawl into it.
