The Ford Escort is a cheap car for thrifty people. It's by no means a bad option. It gets a decent ~110hp, meaning highways and city roads are perfectly fine. But, you do have to realize that it's a 19 year old car that costs $2,000. You get what you pay for.
Story
During high school I had the Escort and my friend had a Pontiac Grand Am. The engine block on his Grand Am cracked, leaving him without a car. This meant that I had to go pick him up on our way to school and back. (I was the closest person and I really didn't mind.) I'll just say that the conversations we had in that car stopped at a red light were dumb and stupid but totally great. All thanks... (more)
Pros
The cassette player is great (assuming, of course, you still use tapes). Comes with auto reverse and Dolby noise cancellation. Radio in general is fine, as well. Steering wheel is comfortable, meaning a separate cover isn't required. It even comes with power doors, windows, and a key fob! Great fuel mileage, roughly 30. Repairs are far and few between as well.
Cons
The car is a bit cramped. Even though, in theory, you could fit in five adults, including yourself, they will not find the experience enjoyable. It's not a very repairable car. To replace the front headlamps, you have to remove the front bumper, which is screwed on behind a plastic flap deep under the wheel well. Get yourself a repair manual if you're getting one of these. Car alarm is a bit annoying. If it's armed, you must use your key fob to unlock the doors, or else it WILL go off. If you leave the interior light on and leave the car, they will stay on. All day. All night. Eventually t... (more)

I purchased this car used. As a used car it has done what I have asked of it, namely get me from home to work and back again. That is a distance of about 14 miles a day. When I lost the timing belt early on, that was on me. A little research would have shown me they tend to break at around 110,000 miles, right were I purchased the vehicle mileage wise. Since then, it has held up pretty well. A few minor glitches with the brake lights. Overall, considering its age and the high probability that the previous owner drove the Heck out of this car, I must say she's a good old work horse. One thing that I have learned is, whenever possible buy something new or at least newer. If you can't afford one, maybe it's not time to buy. Essentially when purchasing a used car you are in fac... Story
I have to park my escort on the street. One night, some bastard went along our street (in Hollywood CA) and keyed every car. For some reason known only to the criminal involved, he by passed my Escort. It was as if I had put the blood of the lamb on my door and the angel of Death passed us by!
Pros
Starts and drives on 98% of the days I get in her. That is pretty dependable for a 17 year old car. Thanks to AAA for the other 2%.
Cons
Getting sluggish. The engine seems to be nearing the end of its natural life cycle. New tires and a tune-up really isn't cutting it anymore.

Over all, the vehicle is a good purchase. Mine is 14 years old and honestly is still in pretty good condition. I don't have more than 100,000 miles on it, so part of its condition is due to that, but I have moved cross country with it twice in the past year with it full of stuff and it had no real problems. The problems I have had have been minor (the cars automatic windows have stopped going up after having gone down, the tape player does work) but all in all it's a nice car. It's fairly small and it's a two door, so I wouldn't recommend it as a family car, but the trunk is sizable to be honest and, like I said, held most of my possessions during my move. It would be a great car for a new driver as it IS small and compact and not too hard to control.
Story
I've done two moves in this car, one to Colorado and one to Michigan, both beautiful places, and the car performed beautifully, no problems, the trips were easy and we had a lot of fun driving cross country.
Pros
It's really easy to check fluids and replace filters, compact and easy to maneuver, sizable trunk for such a small car, few major problems, good gas mileage
Cons
Battery is a bit hard to get out if you need to replace it, moon roof sometimes leaks a bit after a rain (but I'm unsure if that's just an issue with mine), it's not a very powerful car so sometimes it needs a bit of time to get up to speed, not very convenient if you need constant access to the back seat, not good in snow or ice
