I had never owned a Ford before purchasing the Explorer, and I had no idea what to expect. My last car was a Chevy Blazer and in comparison this car has given me very few problems in the 100,000 miles I have put on it. It has never left me stranded and my maintenance repairs were always reasonable. The only thing I noticed were the little things that would break, such as the rear windshield wiper or the automatic door locks. However I would prefer these kinds of repairs over more costly engine issues. I still have the original radio and the electrical system seems very solid, I haven't had any issues with weather-stripping either. I was very impressed with the style of the sport model, it had a futuristic feel to the dash gauges and lights for it's time. The seats were adjustable in th... (more)
Story
I loved taking this car up to the mountains and driving in the snow! This suv handles quite well in rough weather!
Pros
I love how high you sit in this suv, not a problem seeing over parked cars on the street. I liked having a rear windshield wiper, and again I loved the fact that the maintenance was reasonable, did not nickel and dime me to death.
Cons
Little things do seem to break here and there, the fuse for the dash kept going on for awhile and the power windows and rear wiper broke.

I bought this used 2002 Ford Explorer Sport and am pleasantly surprised. She runs great even with 200,000 plus miles. Never gives me any trouble, pretty decent on gas for an SUV.
Story
My brother's LARGE Dodge 3500 broke down and my little Ford Explorer Sport pulled him home with ease! :)
Pros
Love the boxy shape. Rides smooth. Interior is in excellent condition for its age: to tears or stains. Nice soft gray cloth interior. Plenty of room in the cargo area to carry our nursery plants. Gets 21 mpg, which is great for an SUV. Fun to drive, nice control.
Cons
High mileage (200,000+)

The vehicle was purchased from a family friend for $1000. It has endured extensive use as the odometer exceeded 200,000 miles upon purchase. I've been told that Fords are notorious for rusting and my vehicle confirms such a reputation. The lower end of the vehicle's body has suffered much oxidation to such a level where some portions of the car body have crumbled off. However, these worries are merely aesthetic as the vehicle still runs very well after a beating; Reliability at it's best. It is spacious enough for my needs when considering passenger space and cargo in the rear. The gas mileage is very poor in the city, where I primarily drive it, and slightly better on highway. The rear wheel drive concerns me each winter season because of snowfall, but the vehicle's height from the ... (more)
Story
One of the first days of using the vehicle, I used the plastic trim on the bottom of the car body as support when entering. As I put a substantial amount of my weight on the trim, some of the rust gave way causing the trim to disconnect from the body of the vehicle leaving me to fall upon my knee. Not the best memory, but she still drove like a dream after that sad display.
Pros
It is reliable in design and has withstood years of punishment before I attained it. It is masculine and appealing in appearance. It is robust in design as dirt is not as visible in the interior. It's far proximity from the ground that will help combat heavy snowfall. Hitch compatibility in rear of vehicle.
Cons
Its tendency to easily rust. The gas mileage is rather poor on both highway and city. The rear wheel drive may prove a disadvantage during heavy snowfall. The lack of weight in the rear of the vehicle which may aggravate the disadvantage posed during heavy snowfall.
