1992 Ford Tempo - Great commuter car
My car is a 1992 white Ford Tempo GL. I like this car because it is roomy for a sedan, and gets good gas mileage. I don't like the interior, the vinyl feels cheap and there are no cup holders. It runs pretty well considering I am bad about regularly maintaining it.
Story
One fun story I have in my car is driving it on the beach in Long Beach. It handled the loose sand surprisingly well for a sedan and it was a lot of fun driving around in the surf and through the sand.
Pros
One of the top positive things is the gas mileage. My car gets approximately 25-30 MPG depending on how much freeway driving I'm doing, which is impressive considering the car is almost as old as I am. One of my favorite features is that the gas cap locks and can only be opened using a button inside the glove box.
Cons
The top negative things about this vehicle are the interior, which is vinyl and carpeted and blue. I think the entirely blue interior is just weird, but I guess it's better than the other option which was maroon. I also don't like that the windows in the back only roll halfway down, and the doors in the back don't open parallel to the vehicle like in a modern car. That can make transporting big items difficult.
1991 Ford Tempo - Cheap Car, Easy Fix, Lasted a Long time
I bought this car for $50.00 Knowing it needed a new head gasket, brakes, rotors, and work on the transmission. It's a red 4 door. It had a really nice interior still for it's age. I took it to my step dad who helped me with labor, his friends as well. I ended up paying $800.00 + 5 Cases of Bud Light for all the parts and repairs. I also put new tires on it. After all of the repairs I have had this car for 12 years now. I do keep it up with oil changes, system flushes and such but I love my car.
Story
Fixing the car up was a blast. Getting to help with it was amazing and taught me things about cars I never thought about before or would know otherwise.
Pros
Super Cheap, Reliable
Cons
The original head gasket blew more than once from what I was told by the previous owner and to expect it to go out again within a few years. I'm not sure why the one my step dad put in has lasted as long as it has but I am grateful for it.
1990 Ford Tempo - The little engine that could
I bought this car off of craigslist for $400. I'm a commuter college student and bought this with my change check. It has really great gas mileage and it only breaks down about once every semester. I like the vintage charm of it and it fits my friends and can squeeze into small parking spots.
It's also really old and busted looking. It only has half a of 1 bumper left and the paint is peeling off. The tape player doesn't work so I can't play my cassette tapes and I can't use the thing to make my phone play through the speakers. The AC is also broken and it's such a weird AC that it would be expensive to replace everything to update it. Pretty much every thing I would need to do to make this car look presentable would cost more than I paid for it so I'm waiting til I graduate to buy a... (more)
