This car has been a very reliable vehicle. I have liked how it has performed in both city driving and on the highway. I have a rather large family (4 kids) and it has fit us very comfortably on some long trips. The driver's seat is comfortable and firm. The console area is not too bulky as I'm a fairly broad-shouldered person. The trunk area is just the right size for us to store 6 medium-sized suitcases when we travel. The back seats fold down pretty easily when we need to haul some larger things.
Story
I've driven the kids to see Christmas decorations in this car. Invariably, at lease one of the kids falls asleep when we go.
Pros
The dashboard has everything I like: it's simple with not too many dials. I drive on hills a fair amount and the transmission (in "Drive") does not allow the car to "take off" when going down a hill. I like this as I like to stay within the speed limit. It's easy to attach child seats to the installed seats. I've had to change out one headlight bulb and it was very easy to do this. In a previous model, my wife was rear-ended but the car provided excellent protection. The the car was a total loss, there were no serious injuries. The indicators are about as loud as I need them to be.
Cons
The CD player and the DVD player are a bit touchy. One of the seats does not fold down easily when we need extra cargo area. Like many Fords, the engine isn't the quietest. The engine isn't loud but it isn't as quiet as, say, some Toyota models I've seen. The cup holders are a little narrow for my cups that I bring in the car.

This vehicle has a lot of room for passengers and converts fairly easily to allow for hauling of furniture and other large items. However, it does not respond quickly to the gas or brake pedals. If you are accustomed to a responsive car, then you will need to adjust your driving style. Also, there are no luxury upgrades such as leather seats, heated seats, etc. The interior is functional but not beautiful. Regarding maintenance: The Ford Freestyle does hold up fairly well under normal conditions. It does need regular oil changes and checkups though. After about twelve years, the air conditioning gave out. When we took the Freestyle in to our local Ford dealership for repairs, we learned that fixing the air conditioning would cost more than what the car is currently worth! So, of course... (more)
Story
While I was trying to change a tire on an icy road, the jack slipped from underneath the car, and I was almost crushed!
Pros
Ease of seat conversion. Amount of space for hauling large items. Lots of seats available for passengers. Low maintenance. Longevity.
Cons
Not very responsive. No luxuries. Very wide (I almost can't fit it through my garage door).
