I have 1999 Chevy Lumina that has 210,000 miles on it. This car runs like a champ. I get about 20 miles per gallon city. On the highway I get about 25 MPG. There was only one cup holder in the car. I installed a center CD and cup holder piece and it worked out well. I did put some money in to this car. Really nothing more than regular maintenance. My car and other Luminas I noticed have rust around the gas intake. Also my air conditioner does not work. I was quoted $700 for it to be fixed. I turned the offer down. This car has some good acceleration. It will get up and go. I do believe I have small oil leak. I also have had problems with it over heating. That got taken care of by some stop leak.
Story
Driving it to a Cub's game at Wrigley, which is 150 miles from me. I had the best time.
Pros
Pros are gas mileage, the acceleration, and the long lasting of the car.
Cons
All Lumina's seem to have a rust spot where the gas intake is. One cup holder. Fuses seemed to blow quick.

My Chevy Lumina is an excellent winter car. I live down hill from the road and my driveway is steep - guests usually get stuck trying to pull out of my drive in the snow, but not my Lumina. The Lumina is a beast. It backs up the hill even on snow covered ice. It goes well down sandy beach roads as well. The Lumina is a good travel car with plenty of space, plenty of power, and it never gets stuck. The Lumina goes forever, mine is 19 years old.
Story
I was driving a forest road in the National Forest outside of Ludington, MI. The road went from hard dirt to sand for a few dozen yards. It was sketchy, I was a long way from friends who could pull me out. But I thought the Lumina could get it. I gunned the motor, I stayed on the gas, didn't break, didn't turn, and pushed right through the sand.
Pros
Very roomy. I've driven cross country in the Lumina several times and it has always been an excellent travel car. The Lumina's trunk is big enough for all my equipment, backpacking gear, car camping gear, going out clothes, tools, everything. I swapped the trailer hitch for a bike rack, it adds so much space. The passenger seat kicks way back with plenty of leg room which is great for sleeping. The Lumina just goes and goes and goes. It's had some pretty major repair jobs, but I'm thrilled with its longevity, and the cars body holds up; I live in Michigan, and the Lumina is rust free.
Cons
The Chevy Lumina is a big car, lots of room, lots of power. It's great if you've got to move lots of stuff down the interstate in comfort, but there are cars with better gas mileage. The Lumina is not the car to go with if you've got a long commute, or you need to squeeze your way around a crowded city.

The Chevy Lumina is about as "luminous" as a cave at midnight when the moon is nowhere in sight. What a clunker! This thing had a head gasket recall that was the bane of my existence while I owned it. The thing overheated left and right so badly that in the end it couldn't even make it from a fast food menu screen to the first drive thru window without looking like a well stoked chimney. The turn signals were also all out of whack when purchased. I had to do all kinds of manual manipulation to get them to work from hand jiggling to rewiring and then they'd still go out from time to time. The brakes? Gimme a break more like it. Those were pathetic as well. Rust bucket, too! Never purchase a Chevy Lumina during those recall days... In fact, avoid at all costs no matter the year just out ... (more)
Story
The only good thing to come of this car is slapstick and "you gotta be kidding me" moments when it broke down which was very often. At least I got some cardio when I had to foot it for miles when I got stranded.
Pros
The colors and exterior design on this vehicle was fairly nice. The interior design wasn't too bad either. Both the interior and trunk were roomy and the A/C (when it worked which isn't saying much) was very cold. At least I got some cash from a junk dealer when I took it to a parts junk yard.
Cons
Head gasket recall made this an owner's and mechanic's nightmare. It was basically unsalvageable despite attempt after attempt to fix it by replacing parts, coolant, etc.. The head gasket problems created tons of other problems: no heat, no A/C, no defrost, smoke, etc.. The heater took very long to work ever. The power windows conked out on me. Sometimes they wouldn't go down at all. Other times they were stuck down which was terrible in winter. Leaked oil, leaked coolant. Blinkers on the blink. Brakes not the greatest and needed frequent replacing.
