I have 1999 Chevy Lumina that has 210,000 miles on it. This car runs like a champ. I get about 20 miles per gallon city. On the highway I get about 25 MPG. There was only one cup holder in the car. I installed a center CD and cup holder piece and it worked out well. I did put some money in to this car. Really nothing more than regular maintenance. My car and other Luminas I noticed have rust around the gas intake. Also my air conditioner does not work. I was quoted $700 for it to be fixed. I turned the offer down. This car has some good acceleration. It will get up and go. I do believe I have small oil leak. I also have had problems with it over heating. That got taken care of by some stop leak.
Story
Driving it to a Cub's game at Wrigley, which is 150 miles from me. I had the best time.
Pros
Pros are gas mileage, the acceleration, and the long lasting of the car.
Cons
All Lumina's seem to have a rust spot where the gas intake is. One cup holder. Fuses seemed to blow quick.

I purchased this vehicle after my son was born to allow as a second car for me and my wife. The van didn't have a lot of get up and go, but vans aren't generally supposed to. What it did have was three rows of seats that could be folded down and removed. Our newborn's safety seat clicked into place well. I appreciated being able to transport furniture items that we bought such as a crib and later, children's furniture for our son. The specs stated 17/24 mpg. What I remember was more like 14 -15 mpg driving in the city and closer to 27 on the highway, when the cruise control was set. In addition to being a family transport car that met our transportation needs beginning with our son's birth to his early elementary school years, we took long cross country out-of-state trips. I w... (more)
Story
We decided late one Friday that it would be fun to drive to Vegas from where we live in LA. It took about an hour to get enough belongings together to make the drive so we loaded up the car and our son and headed on down highway 15. Our son loved the sights that were so new to him that he kept pointing out the window and saying "look!" "look!" When we got to state line, we were beat and the mo... (more)
Pros
The car was reasonably affordable. I paid less than 11,000 for the 3 year old van. For the several years we owned it, I only recall paying for oil changes and an inexpensive O2 oxygen sensor replacement. The car reliably passed smog. I really liked the room inside the vehicle and the fuel economy. It's a great car for taking the kids to school and picking them up. The van is solid on the open highway and can be depended upon for the long cross country trips.
Cons
The sound system was basic, but very usable. The engine compartment was crammed and any type of work would have to be performed by a mechanic and once they saw what they were working with, they added their premium. I did not feel that the car would do very well in a collision and it's fortunate that we never were involved in one. The cloth seats were a challenge to get clean from sneaker marks and food spills.

My Chevy Lumina is an excellent winter car. I live down hill from the road and my driveway is steep - guests usually get stuck trying to pull out of my drive in the snow, but not my Lumina. The Lumina is a beast. It backs up the hill even on snow covered ice. It goes well down sandy beach roads as well. The Lumina is a good travel car with plenty of space, plenty of power, and it never gets stuck. The Lumina goes forever, mine is 19 years old.
Story
I was driving a forest road in the National Forest outside of Ludington, MI. The road went from hard dirt to sand for a few dozen yards. It was sketchy, I was a long way from friends who could pull me out. But I thought the Lumina could get it. I gunned the motor, I stayed on the gas, didn't break, didn't turn, and pushed right through the sand.
Pros
Very roomy. I've driven cross country in the Lumina several times and it has always been an excellent travel car. The Lumina's trunk is big enough for all my equipment, backpacking gear, car camping gear, going out clothes, tools, everything. I swapped the trailer hitch for a bike rack, it adds so much space. The passenger seat kicks way back with plenty of leg room which is great for sleeping. The Lumina just goes and goes and goes. It's had some pretty major repair jobs, but I'm thrilled with its longevity, and the cars body holds up; I live in Michigan, and the Lumina is rust free.
Cons
The Chevy Lumina is a big car, lots of room, lots of power. It's great if you've got to move lots of stuff down the interstate in comfort, but there are cars with better gas mileage. The Lumina is not the car to go with if you've got a long commute, or you need to squeeze your way around a crowded city.
