1997 Chevrolet Suburban - Reliable transportation; lots of cargo space

I bought this car used from a neighbor who hadn't used it in quite a while. It required a lot of work to get it going. Brake lines were a problem as was door hardware. I had a fuel pump go on it early on, and had to replace a leaking radiator after about two years. Also had to replace the blower motor -- it went out in the dead of winter. I've put over 60,000 miles on the car (odometer isn't quite 200,000 yet), and haven't had other difficulties with it. All things considered, I think that's pretty good for a vehicle that's more than 15 years old.
Story
Blower motor went out on me in the dead of winter -- windshield fogged up and I couldn't see a thing. Pulled over and called my mechanic -- he walked me through a temporary fix -- told me where I could find the blower motor location on the inside of the truck -- and suggested I bang on it with whatever I had handy. I used a long-handled windshield scraper -- worked like a charm for a couple of... (more)
Pros
Workhorse of an engine -- just keeps going and going.... Handles easily -- even for something this size Mechanics seem to have no problem fixing it -- very familiar to all of them, and parts are easy to find. Lots of people and cargo space. Great sound system.
Cons
Gas mileage is poor Door hardware is unreliable -- I've replaced it once and it needs replacing again. Rear door hinge is out as well on one side. Air conditioning isn't very good. Wish it had a handhold for the driver to use to get in.

1993 Chevrolet Suburban - Sturdy, reliable vehicle with great hauling capacity

My family has had this vehicle since I was born. It has been a sturdy and reliable vehicle since then- it has run well and has needed relatively few major fixes over the years. It has a great hauling capacity and I feel very safe driving it. My biggest complaint is the terrible gas mileage- it's very expensive to drive due to its age and size.
Story
I use this vehicle to drive my grandmother around (who can still jump up into this massive truck at age 85) and have shared a lot of memories together in that truck.
Pros
One of the best things about this vehicle is that it has tons of space for hauling or moving. I used this vehicle when moving to and from college and it had plenty of space for all of my belongings. It also seats 8, which is great for carpooling. It is also a very sturdy and reliable vehicle. It's 22 years old and has given us fewer problems than many of our (much) newer vehicles. I also feel very safe driving this vehicle due to its size and sturdiness- I know that if I were in an accident, I would probably be relatively safe.
Cons
The worst part about this vehicle, in my opinion, is that it has terrible gas mileage. As a very large truck with great space for hauling, it also comes with a very large and inefficient engine. It is also inefficient due to its age. My other complaint is that the radio is fairly limited and its speakers are weak. This type of vehicle is also very expensive these days (though it was cheap when we bought it).

I think it is very well built and I've never had any problems with it. I live in the country and have put it to the test many times; it has never failed me. I love that it has 4 x 4. Has a lot of power so when I'm towing the boat or fish house I don't have to worry about not making it up a hill or breaking the drive shaft when pulling the boat out of the water. My suburban has plenty of room for my family of seven and our gear. I like the 4 x 4 auto switch. You turn that on and if tires start to slip it turns on the four wheel drive. When other cars are doing 10 MPH in the snow I'm doing 45. Gets ok gas mileage but could do better. Does not get good gas mileage when I'm hauling something by trailer. Do not like how the spare tire comes down on every Chevy that I've owned; the device fo... (more)
Story
I got the tractor which is a 1946 farmall model M stuck out in the mud. It was a very rainy spring. My land is all clay loam so not fun. The wife, kids an next door neighbor told me the suburban wouldn't get it out an we were going to have to ask the farmer down the road to come get it out. I said lets just try it. Every one said no I would get the truck stuck too. But I didn't listen. Drove o... (more)
Pros
The things I like most it's very well built. I have never, I mean never, had a issue with drive train or motor components. Things that need to be changed regularly like spark plugs, oil, plug wires, alternator are easily accessible so you don't have to take it to mechanic to you save money. It has great power for towing.
Cons
Not many negative things to list other than they could put more time and money into the manufacturing of all the plastic components. Stuff that needs to be metal like door handles. Definitely need to come with a better way to let down spare tire that thing has ticked me off more then once. Like 4 times.
