1997 Chevrolet Suburban - Reliable transportation; lots of cargo space

I bought this car used from a neighbor who hadn't used it in quite a while. It required a lot of work to get it going. Brake lines were a problem as was door hardware. I had a fuel pump go on it early on, and had to replace a leaking radiator after about two years. Also had to replace the blower motor -- it went out in the dead of winter. I've put over 60,000 miles on the car (odometer isn't quite 200,000 yet), and haven't had other difficulties with it. All things considered, I think that's pretty good for a vehicle that's more than 15 years old.
Story
Blower motor went out on me in the dead of winter -- windshield fogged up and I couldn't see a thing. Pulled over and called my mechanic -- he walked me through a temporary fix -- told me where I could find the blower motor location on the inside of the truck -- and suggested I bang on it with whatever I had handy. I used a long-handled windshield scraper -- worked like a charm for a couple of... (more)
Pros
Workhorse of an engine -- just keeps going and going.... Handles easily -- even for something this size Mechanics seem to have no problem fixing it -- very familiar to all of them, and parts are easy to find. Lots of people and cargo space. Great sound system.
Cons
Gas mileage is poor Door hardware is unreliable -- I've replaced it once and it needs replacing again. Rear door hinge is out as well on one side. Air conditioning isn't very good. Wish it had a handhold for the driver to use to get in.

My family has had this vehicle since I was born. It has been a sturdy and reliable vehicle since then- it has run well and has needed relatively few major fixes over the years. It has a great hauling capacity and I feel very safe driving it. My biggest complaint is the terrible gas mileage- it's very expensive to drive due to its age and size.
Story
I use this vehicle to drive my grandmother around (who can still jump up into this massive truck at age 85) and have shared a lot of memories together in that truck.
Pros
One of the best things about this vehicle is that it has tons of space for hauling or moving. I used this vehicle when moving to and from college and it had plenty of space for all of my belongings. It also seats 8, which is great for carpooling. It is also a very sturdy and reliable vehicle. It's 22 years old and has given us fewer problems than many of our (much) newer vehicles. I also feel very safe driving this vehicle due to its size and sturdiness- I know that if I were in an accident, I would probably be relatively safe.
Cons
The worst part about this vehicle, in my opinion, is that it has terrible gas mileage. As a very large truck with great space for hauling, it also comes with a very large and inefficient engine. It is also inefficient due to its age. My other complaint is that the radio is fairly limited and its speakers are weak. This type of vehicle is also very expensive these days (though it was cheap when we bought it).

2008 Chevrolet Suburban - Great design, poor engine

We bought this vehicle new in 2008. Initially, it was great overall. Very roomy, comfortable, and a smooth ride. No problems. Another great unexpected feature was how far we could go without stopping. Some friends and I drove from Idaho to Nevada once without stopping, well over 400 miles. This was accomplished due to the large gas tank and utilizing the cruise control to maximize fuel efficiency. Our kids like the large amount of space in the seats, and there is good leg room when transporting adults in the second row seats as well. However, we started having problems with the engine. It started using massive amounts of oil. It wasn't leaking. It was just consuming the oil somehow to the point where we could only drive about 1,000 miles before it was nearly out of oil. We went back an... (more)
Story
We have several. One summer, we took a family trip to Utah, which was about a six-hour drive for us. We planned accordingly and had things to keep everyone occupied during the trip, and we all had a comfortable, enjoyable trip.
Pros
The best feature is the space. This is a very large vehicle, and every person in it from front to back rides in comfort. Second best is ride quality, due in part to again being a large vehicle. It is very smooth to drive.
Cons
The problem with the faulty engine is the only negative, however, this is a huge negative. Nothing else matters if they engine doesn't work.
