After 10 years of getting from here to there with 4 kids and all of their stuff in our trusty minivan, we moved to our Suburban. It is such a great option for active families to get where they need to go and bring lots of stuff with them. My boys are in sports and it is so easy to throw everything in the trunk and pile all of the kids in the Suburban.
Story
My husband has the best Suburban experience so far. He got to slip it into 4 wheel drive on a guys' weekend with his friends and easily transversed streams and backwoods trails. He loved it!
Pros
Our Suburban has a lot of "umph" (that's the technical term) for its size. Even though it is big enough to carry 8 people and a lot of gear, I don't ever worry when I'm turning into traffic that I won't be able to get up to speed fast enough. The audio system is great. We have a factory installed DVD system and wireless headsets that the kids can use to control their own music on long trips.
Cons
Price. Our Suburban was not cheap. Even though we bought it as a used car 2 years past its release date, it was still the most expensive can that we have even owned. Gas mileage. It also is expensive to drive. If you are a commuter or have a smaller family, a minivan is a great alternative.

We have an active family and we need a lot of room in one of our vehicle. All other SUV and crossover alternative had tradeoffs in either the passenger room or the cargo space. The Chevy Suburban answered both criteria. We picked the 2500 model (bigger engine and more rugged mechanical components because the 1500 model were just too expensive.
Story
Trip with the whole family to the lake. We had the whole clan, the dog, our camping stuff and some room to spare.
Pros
Room for passenger AND cargo. No other non commercial vehicle is better. Even in its more rugged version (the 2500) the ride is pretty smooth and you have plenty of power when you need it. It's a no frills truck without too many complicated electronics making some repairs a bit easier.
Cons
It's a gas guzzler in every sense of the way. Especially if you are pulling a trailer, it will not be fuel efficient. No way around it. When the road is a bit bumpy, the back row feels it, since its an old school suspension. The finish is a bit bland in the interior, it is an utility truck after all.
