1999 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 - A good, sturdy, truck.

A well built rugged truck that has run well with a minimum of maintenance needs other than normal oil changes. It has held up well to winter road salt even without many washes to remove from the undercarriage. The interior has held up well and few if any of the accessories have worn or broken. The paint has been pretty durable even with the many off road treks and back woods firewood cutting jobs done on a monthly basis. The four wheel drive has worked flawlessly and I have never become stuck and required assistance. It does get poor gas mileage. And has become worse as the age has grown now down to 10-13 MPG. But it is a big 3/4 tom truck and no matter if I am hauling 20 bails of hay or a few thousand pounds of firewood it gets the same mileage. The engine still has good torque and ha... (more)
Pros
Heavy load hauling and trailing capacity, I can rent a bulldozer and can hook up and go with no worries about the tow home. It has a very smooth comfortable ride for such a big truck and the drivers seat has multiple lumbar controls to adjust the ride. The rear seat is large enough for my two boys to ride comfortably for long trips. The heat and air blow hard and fast...In the winter it will defrost in only minutes and the air conditioning in summer will freeze you out on high. I feel very safe and secure in this large well made truck.
Cons
Gas Mileage is lacking at ten to thirteen MPG and it is really hard to turn and maneuver in parking lots and drive thru's.

2004 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 - The truck has never let me down, has been rugged and a joy to drive.

I love driving my Chevy Silverado. I've always wanted a Silverado and when I got the chance to finally buy one, I jumped for it. I had previously driven a full-size truck and found it hard to park and get around corners in town. I no longer have that issue with my Silverado. Also, as I am a short woman, I like the ability to sit up higher than a car but not so high that I need a step ladder to get in. The Silverado fits that bill perfectly. This particular truck is basic in it's styling--no frills--and I like that. There's less to go wrong. As far as driving my Silverado goes, overall I really enjoy it. It's easy to control even if it's a bit bouncy in the back end. I can see out of it very well (one of the things I love about trucks in general). Best of all, I still have plenty of roo... (more)
Story
About four years ago, my husband and my son both were in physical rehab at the same time. I had worried all three of us wouldn't fit in the cab. But I was wrong. We were able to fit my son with his leg in a brace, my 300lb+ husband and me all in without much trouble. Plenty of foot room, thank goodness!
Pros
This truck is easy to drive, easy to corner, looks like a truck should (boxy) and runs great!
Cons
I wish that it got a little bit better gas mileage. So far it seems to hold steady at 17/mpg. Otherwise, because it is a short-bed truck, it tends to be a bit bouncier on the highway than a full-sized truck would be.

Overall this truck performed well above expectations. The engine had plenty of power for towing and the ride was very smooth. The four wheel drive worked every time it was called on, which was a lot in the mountains of Oregon. Any maintenance was straightforward and all major components were easy to access. It got good mileage on the highway for a 4x4, even when those miles were in four wheel drive. The movable work light under the hood was a nice extra. The truck was solid and most of the parts held up under heavy workload that technically exceeded specs. The heater/defroster worked a bit too well cracking the windshield in the winter.
Story
When I decided it was time to buy a truck, I set a day on the calendar to go talk to the dealership. The day before it snowed 28 inches. I was determined so I went anyway and took my test drive in four wheel drive. It was recommended I bring it back for a break in service at 800 miles. Well, I drove it off the lot and the first 340 miles I put on it were in four wheel drive.
Pros
The shift on the fly four wheel drive was the best. Never any delay, just throw the lever from 2 hi to 4 hi and it was done. Real asset when crossing mountain passes. The steering was tight and sure but very easy with just the right amount of feedback. The 5 speed manual gearbox was rock solid with well defined shift gates.
Cons
The nice ride afforded by the independent front suspension came at a price. Weak C.V. joints that could come apart under heavy pulls in four wheel drive. The design of the radio made mounting a traditional aftermarket unit impossible. The headlights were plastic and had a tendency to yellow and cloud over every few years.
