2004 Ford Focus - Reliable Grocery Getter
I got this car because I needed something reliable to mostly get around town but also for the occasional long trip. The car is comfortable for going long distances and gets the good gas mileage I would expect from a sedan. The trunk is also surprisingly roomy; a trip to Ikea in this car is surprisingly reasonable. I've only now started having trouble with it at over 120,000 miles. This is a good car if you're looking for something pedestrian, something that will get where you need to go without being flashy. It has good get up and go from stoplights and will certainly hit 85 to 90 on the highway. It is a four door sedan, though so you aren't going to turn any heads and it's easy to lose it in a large parking lot. But as long as you keep up the maintenance it will take care of you in re... Story
I love taking it around the back roads and exploring the out of the way locations in my area. I like taking pictures of the wildflowers.
Pros
I love the gas mileage I get with this car
Cons
My air conditioning stopped working. And I'm in Texas.
2004 Ford Focus - Great first car!
This car has been wonderful to own. I bought it used from a third-party dealer and got a great deal for it. It is a silver hatchback with standard wheels. It is a front-wheel drive manual transmission. I picked the manual transmission because I live in Colorado. The transmission allows me to control the traction and engine performance better in rough weather, especially since this car is light weight with a smaller engine overall. The gas mileage has been great over the life of the car. The last time I checked I was getting ~27 mpg in the city. Not bad at all for a 14-year-old car! I like that the car is compact and durable. I really like the car reliability though. The past 11 years that I have had the car, I have not had a serious malfunction with it. The engine is still ... (more)
Story
Probably the best memory about this car was driving it out to northern Nevada from Colorado. I drove it out there for an internship I was participating in over the summer. The drive was wonderful, and the car handled very well over the whole trip.
Pros
My favorite things about the car are its compact size, especially when my wife and I are driving in the city. Another favorite thing about the car has been its gas mileage. The mileage has been a great help to my family, especially since this car has predominantly been a commuter car (back and forth to work). Another great thing has been the manual transmission. The transmission has gotten me out of some situations in bad weather that I believe other cars would have been stuck in. The transmission has lasted a long time, and I am still on the original clutch. The engine performance h... (more)
Cons
Though they are few, there are some negative things about this car. One of my least favorite things is that the air conditioner sometimes causes the car to idle too high and eventually the car will die. This is not a huge concern, and there are work around to it. Another thing has been, as the clutch ages, the second gear pops out occasionally. Another has been the size overall. As my family has grown, this car has become less and less useful. It is great for a single rider or a couple, but much more than that, and the car becomes a hassle. Tires have been another sticking point for... (more)
