2007 Chevrolet Aveo - Great economy car with no bells or whistles, great gas mileage.

I bought the Chevrolet Aveo more for financial reasons, and less because I liked the car a lot. The car has a 2.3L 4 cylinder engine, which doesn't provide very much acceleration or total speed - but it holds its own on the freeway. The gas mileage is excellent (about 38 MPG on the freeway). There are no bells or whistles. No power windows or locks. No CD player (although it does include an input for a phone or music player). No cruise control, or any performance information on the dash. Just a plain and simple car for someone who needs to get somewhere, and doesn't have much money to spend. The car itself is very compact and fits into any tight spot. Surprisingly, the car feels a lot bigger and roomier when you're inside it. But that doesn’t stop the car from looking cheap, slightly f... (more)
Story
Surprisingly the car handles well in winter w/ good snow tires. I remember sliding off the road and having to dig my little car out of the snow. The lightness of the car helped get it out of the snow and back onto the road.
Pros
I loved the gas mileage. With almost 38 MPG on the freeway and closer to 30 on streets, this car saved me a lot of money on gas. The car is pretty responsive and can handle sharp turns. It's kind of fun zipping around in this little car through traffic. I haven't needed too many repairs on the car (aside from the transmission), which leads me to believe that it's pretty solidly built. The price of the car was perfect for what I needed at the time. Not a lot of really special details about this car, but it's not supposed to have them. This is a car you drive to work if you have a pretty lon... (more)
Cons
You get what you pay for. There are no power locks on this car, which makes the act of locking and unlocking your car turn into a real annoyance over time. And the car is not compatible with any key FOBs, so you're stuck locking and unlocking each individual door with your key, or by physically pushing the knob down. Same goes with power windows - get ready to roll them up and down by hand. You don't have the luxury of controlling all windows anywhere, so it's especially annoying having to roll up or down a back window when you're in the car alone. The car stereo has very few features, and... (more)

I bought my bright red Aveo Hatchback new at the end of 2006, and I have been very pleased with it overall. It was an inexpensive car, and there are things about it that go along with that. It always rattled a bit. The ride isn't always smooth like butter. But it has been a darn cute and reliable little car. Chevy stopped making them, and now makes a slightly smaller vehicle, the Spark. I think that may be too small for me.
Story
It does well in all weather, even major snowstorms. I've had to did it out sometimes, but then it goes!
Pros
The car is just the right size. I love that it is short (except when I am looking for it in the parking lot, when I can never see it, but I still don't really mind.) It is the right height. I can't believe how low some cars were that I used to drive, and how a person had to slink down into them. When I bought the car the trend seemed to be making the entrance to the car as high as possible, so you had to jump in. The Aveo is great. You slide in. No jumping and no slinking. Also, it is a good size for carrying ordinary cargo, though too small for anything major.
Cons
Speaking of cargo, I like the fold-down seats, but it is a negative to me that they don't go anywhere. Other cars have seats seemingly fold into the floor (and obviously there has to be room for them to go, which the Aveo doesn't have) but maybe if they folded more forward, into the backseat leg room, there would be a flatter, more versatile cargo area. The one unreliable feature of the vehicle was the ignition. There were occasional times, through the years, that it would refuse to turn, and I couldn't start the car. Eventually, there was a day when it never got over that, and I had i... (more)
