It's reliable and much easier on gas than full-size trucks. The electronic components have always worked as they should. The crew cab is roomy enough for a family of four to fit easily and travel long distances in relative comfort.
Story
One year I took the family on vacation to a large city. We took a wrong turn that turned into a cattle path. It was quite enjoyable at first, but the further we went, the worse the road became. We went further and further into Amish country, and it became darker and darker. Finally we came out in what appeared to be an abandoned Ghost Town. I continued to follow the GPS, and we eventually ende... (more)
Pros
It's easy on gas, and the 4wd will take you where you need to go. The interior and hardware hold up to heavy use. The bed is short but has proven very useful. I have carried loads of topsoil, etc., that would have rivaled full-size trucks without any problems. The tires hold up very well on the vehicle, and you will often get many more miles than the manufacturer suggests the tires are good for.
Cons
It will nickel and dime you. Almost every inspection you have to replace, ball joints, idler arms...something. It eats wheel bearings. A pair of wheel bearings that are quality lifetime bearings will last about three years in this truck. In its most recent episode, the starter went out. This went out without warning which is odd for a starter. The body is also not holding up to northern winters as good as some other, many older, trucks.

The Chevy S-10 is a great little truck. It's not a heavy-duty hauler, but the four-wheel drive is great for wintery climes. It's good for hauling small to medium loads (small appliances, lawn clippings, etc.).
Story
It's fun to be one of the few people at work who can make it in during the winter. A lot of my coworkers are driving comparatively dinky cars, and while there's not a whole lot of impassible winter roads, I am one of the few troopers to make it in all the time! (Though that does mean I don't get any snow days...hm...)
Pros
The four-door cab is nice. We can fit five people in the truck, though it is a little cheek-to-jowl. The bed of the truck is big enough for the average driver's hauling needs and has a durable liner.
Cons
The gas mileage is not phenomenal, but that's to be expected with this type of vehicle. The cab is a little crowded with multiple passengers, most notably during the summer. The A/C and heat vents are only in the front, which means that the rear passengers are likely to ride with less comfort than those up front. In terms of wear and tear on the vehicle, one of the door seals has loosened over the years. The door shuts well enough, but there does tend to be a lot of wind noise during a drive. While not a significant enough issue to merit paying for repairs, it can be annoying for passengers.
