In the course of a day, I spend about 30 miles driving in and around my city. This past summer, I filled my tank one time thanks to the ability of plugging my Volt into a regular outlet. The trade off between paying a little extra electricity compared to pouring gallons of gas in my 7-gallon tank is well worth it. My Volt runs very smooth and is almost complete silent.
Story
In my 2011 Volt, a huge deer jumped in front of me while I was driving 50 MPH and my car was so structurally sound that my daughter who was sleeping in the back seat didn't even move. The impact was strong that the whole front of the vehicle was smashed in, yet no airbags were deployed. The On-Star rep came on to make sure everyone was safe and he contacted the police and ambulance to come hel... (more)
Pros
Depending on the distance and ability to charge the car where you park away from the house, can give you amazing mileage. I love the heated leather sits and the option of changing the climate control to help you drive "green" and aim for greater mileage on the battery. The amount of cup holders and compartments are fantastic! The ability to plug in your smartphone to listen to your music, talk on the phone hands-free, and using the rear-view camera aid to back out makes you feel like Tony Stark. The car looks less hippy than those other hybrid/electric models out there. The Volt actually h... (more)
Cons
Sits only 4. Ceiling is low for my six-foot tall husband making it a little less than cozy for whichever kid is sitting behind him since he has to adjust his seat. The Volt is too smart and needs the Chevy dealership's service department to help fix any of the problems that may arise. If you drive long distance you have to play the game of "earning mileage" back for the battery so your average MPG doesn't dip to a low number of 35. When you put it in "mountain" drive mode to earn electric mileage and you're driving through a drive-thru, it is noticeably loud. Easy fix: just have to change ... (more)

The vehicle is great for driving less than 40 miles roundtrip. You won't have to use any gas, especially in the summer. If it is cold outside, you will want to keep that trip at 30 miles or below to not use gas. One thing that I don't like about the vehicle is that you have to put premium gas in the car. The car has a plastic-like feel inside with the center console, but most of the buttons have been removed and they are just touch. There is a nice touch screen in the middle console where you can check to see if you can improve your driving style. The car has good torque for an electric vehicle. It is not like a Prius in that this vehicle always uses the battery to power the car. The gasoline powers the battery.
Story
I like driving the vehicle and keeping the green ball in the middle to see how far I can get just on electric. I would drive it way below the speed limit and start slow to try and get better mileage. I once got just shy of 60 miles on pure electric.
Pros
Great overall fuel economy - electric first. If you drive less than 35-40 miles round trip you won't use any gas at all. If you can find free electric stations, which more and more are popping up all over the nation. Then, you don't have to pay for the electric either! Don't have to get routine gas changes because it uses electric first. It has a gauge on it when you should get an oil change. I have driven it over 25000 miles and haven't needed to get an oil change. Very low maintenance vehicle.
Cons
There is a gap in the middle in the back seat. There is a plastic piece that can go in the middle, but it doesn't come with the lower end model. This can be a pain with groceries as they can slide through the middle. May not get very good electric mileage in the cold, which means you start using more gas.
