2005 Chevrolet Avalanche - Good truck with some drawbacks.

I have owned a 2005 Chevy Avalanche for about 3 years now. It is a good solid vehicle with a lot to offer. The in-bed tool boxes are very handy for storing tools and equipment. However they do drastically cut down on the space in the bed which is unfortunate. The back seats fold out which is handy when moving or hauling cargo in the cab. The biggest drawbacks I have found are fuel economy and power. I typically get about 10-12 miles to the gallon in the city which is not ideal. On the highway I get up to 18. I also own the rear-wheel drive model as opposed to the four-wheel drive. This helps on gas I know but can make towing through the mountains (I live in Colorado) difficult and, on occasion, nerve-wrecking. On the whole this is a reliable light duty truck with plenty of passenger ro... (more)
Story
When we moved across state lines a couple years ago, we had a 2 day lag between our old lease and the new one so we decided to camp. We spent two nights sleeping in the bed of the truck and it was actually really nice and fun.
Pros
I like the built in tool boxes though as I previously stated they do detract from the cargo space in the bed. I also like the arrangement of the cab and the ability to fold the back seats out of the way for extra storage. There is also a feature that allows you to fold down the rear wall and window of the cab so the cab is open to the bed. I have never had reason to use this feature but it would be handy if you have to haul something longer than the bed and do not want it to hang off the tailgate too much. I have removed just the window which makes for a nice breeze when driving on a nice ... (more)
Cons
The biggest drawback I have found is fuel consumption. This truck gets 10-12 miles to the gallon in the city which is not totally abysmal for its size, I know. However, compared to our other truck which is newer it leaves something to be desired. Another major drawback is lack of power. It being only rear-wheel drive, it can be make towing large loads more difficult especially on the ample inclines we have in Colorado. It does well on level surfaces but has often really struggled coming across the mountains. If I have the choice I would have gone with the four-wheel drive model for added c... (more)

I enjoy the fact that it is a smooth ride with plenty of room. There is a decent size backseat which fits my children's carseats with ease. The steering is great and the towing package allows for extra power when we need to move things from place to place. The only downside to having this vehicle is that it does get expensive when driving long distances. Driving around town is not really bad but the forty-four miles to and from work gets expensive for a low budget family.
Story
We have family that live a little over an hour from where we live so we travel there quite often. The long ride makes for great conversation between my husband, our children, and myself. We also usually have at least one karaoke competition along the way.
Pros
The pros of this vehicle would be that there is plenty of room on the interior of the truck. I love the fact that the back seats lay down for extra room in the bed. There are covers over the bed so that you can still move items without them getting wet in the rain. There are also tool boxes on each side of the bed which allow for storage of emergency items without taking up space in the back. There is also plenty of storage room under the back seats for emergency items or family items that you may need at a moment's notice.
Cons
The cons of the vehicle would be that it does easily use a lot of fuel. The size of the vehicle could be a problem for some, especially if you live in a big city. The speaker quality is not that great for someone who likes to listen to the music rather loud. The tires are more expensive being that they are bigger.
