2001 Ford Escape - Great car for people good with car repairs or as a first "beater" car (a car that's good for letting people learn how to drive or people who will put a lot of wear and tear on a car)

I love the vehicle, it's great in all weather conditions. It's not so great on gas, I was told it gets roughly 20 mpg and the most I've got it to get is 13. Lots of electrical problems which apparently is an issue with most escapes between 2001 and 2002. Great family car, I'm 6'3 and 330 pounds with minor back issues and I fit nicely and can slide in and out of the car with ease, my daughter loves the spaciousness of it and my wife takes full advantage of the storage capacity. It's great at towing and hauling, not much trunk space but makes up for it with its towing ability. No interior rattles, and the car hasn't had many issues other than the electrical problems.
Story
While doing a car ride with my wife to try and get my daughter to sleep (she was too wound up at the house to go to bed), we ended up driving down what we thought was just an unpaved road for almost 5 minutes with huge bumps and a big mud pit just to find it was an old construction entrance, thank goodness for the cars off-roading ability, we had a close call with almost being stuck in the mud... (more)
Pros
I love the 4 wheel drive capability, it really comes in handy for bad weather. The car holds up well despite its age, already has 200,000 miles and other than the electrical all it needed was yearly maintenance and new tires after a few years. I love most that it comfortably fits me, even some trucks don't let me have as much room as I need being a bigger person and can't beat that it comfortably fits my family also.
Cons
Electrical issues, sunk hundreds into it trying to fix all the electrical issues, lots of blown fuses that luckily are cheap and easy to replace, ended up hard wiring my radio to the battery to reassure myself I'd always have music. And the only other issue is that it's not fuel efficient, understandably so while towing or using 4 wheel drive, but it shouldn't use just as much gas as when you use 4 wheel drive while 4 wheel drive is off.

Had a 2001 Ford Escape as my first car, it was small yet very safe for a young driver. This Escape has not only saved me money in fuel mileage it is fun to drive. I have no doubt this smaller version of the Explorer will be the car for me from here on out. The Ford Escape also doesn't offer more than five seats, which means if your family is looking to push past that level of accommodations then a minivan is probably a safer bet. Overall was a very great, safe care that I would happily put another sixteen year old in.
Story
Used to love taking this car out in a snowstorm when the roads would be empty, it handled great and was strong enough to make me feel safe.
Pros
This Escape has not only saved me money in fuel mileage it is fun to drive. I have no doubt this smaller version of the Explorer will be the car for me from here on out. It handles great, is comfortable to ride in and the fuel economy makes it an all around great automobile. I would recommend this car to any new car owner as well as someone looking for a smaller SUV type.
Cons
If you had to be nitpicky, then the smaller crossover doesn't have the same towing capacity as a full-size SUV, so if you plan to haul a huge camping trailer on a regular basis you might want to look elsewhere. The Ford Escape also doesn't offer more than five seats, which means if your family is looking to push past that level of accommodations then a minivan is probably a safer bet.
