2013 Ford Escape - After 3 trucks I really like this car
This is my first car after 22 years of driving trucks. The ride is great, very smooth and easy to handle. The cargo space is comparable to the small truck that I had before purchasing this car. I know that it's listed as an SUV but it's part of the new breed of cars called crossovers. I prefer to think of them as updated station wagons. There is seating for 5 people (if they don't mind being crowded in the back seat) and lots of space for carrying items in the back. When you put the back seats down you have even more space. I carried home a recliner chair in the back of the car from the store. It fit fine. When you do put the back seats down there is a lip where the seats are instead of a flat area in the back but it doesn't really affect the storage capacity. The standard driving opti... (more)
Story
My brother was teasing me about moving from a truck to a car and the loss of cargo space. I shut him up by packing everything from a room except for a microwave to carry over to his son's new apartment.
Pros
The cruise control, radio and info panel controls are incorporated into the steering wheel for easy access.
The car warns you when there are issues such as low tire pressure on the info panel.
Very nice cargo capacity.
Cons
The central storage area is one big pocket. It's tough to find items that get buried.
The back window and door of the car accumulates dust and dirt. Something about the aerodynamics. I have to clean it each time I stop for gas.
I dislike having to stop for gas more often due to the smaller gas tank.
2013 Ford Escape - Reliable with Maintenance
Overall there are several key things that make the Escape stand out to me. The amount of room in the interior is great, from the wide bench seat to the large storage in the back. It's got a hatch back trunk which is perfect for families with pets because you can't leave them in the trunk! The driver's seat adjusts three ways, perfect for accommodating couples of different heights, and the onboard computer is very user friendly for entertainment, climate control, and diagnostics.
Story
We use this car for road trips with our two children and three dogs. There is enough space for all of us and a nice cooler in the back so we are all comfortable going to a state park for the day or camping overnight.
Pros
My favorite features are the adjustable seats and onboard diagnostics. The warning light has helped me avoid flat tires on several occasions by alerting me when the tire pressure becomes too low. Once it was because the temperature changed dramatically (which affects tire pressure) and once it was because I picked up a nail driving through construction. Both times it saved me the time and expense of needing a tire replacement. The only thing I would improve on it is that the warning doesn't tell you WHICH tire--so if you're like me you spend several minutes walking around scratching your h... (more)
Cons
The biggest con for me were the three safety recalls. This was the first new car I've bought in my life so I don't know if that is normal or not, but just logically that seems like a lot. Three separate times I got a letter in the mail saying that there was recall on a part (engine part, door handle, and something else I don't recall) and three separate times I had to bring my car in and wait for it to be fixed. They did this free of charge, of course, but it was still a big hassle.
