We've gone through one other "family" cars since we bought our black Chevy Silverado 1500 Pickup in 2001. We call it, "Old Reliable." Never expected the truck to still be in excellent shape after 17 years. And that's inside and out. Other than regularly scheduled maintenance and cleaning and waxing, it has never required anything other than the periodic replacement of one inexpensive part, which I will explain in the cons. We've used it to haul supplies, wood, animals, building materials and gravel. It's been used to pulled a camping trailer and, once, a moving trailer over 2,500 miles. Always reliable.
Story
We once went to eastern Kentucky to see "Butcher Holler" where Loretta Lynn was born and reared. It was raining that day, and we got back in the woods on a muddy road and got stuck, really stuck. There was a log house about 100 yards from where we were stuck. I went up and knocked on the door. A man came to the door. He looked every bit the part of a Kentucky backwoodsman. He was. I explained ... (more)
Pros
Reliability is the key word for this 2001 Chevy Silverado 1500 LS. Runs just as it did the day I bought it, brand new. It has over 100,000 miles on it, but it runs like a top and looks as good on the street as it did the day we got it. It will be a sought-after classic someday, but we'll be keeping it. :) General maintenance is simple and relatively inexpensive. And we are religious about scheduled maintenance. Sturdy frame and axles. It has no rattles. Nor does it make an "sounds" that you might just attribute to its age. Engine purrs just like it did the day we brought it home for the fi... (more)
Cons
Ok. One original factory defect which we discovered after a couple of years. At first it scared us. Thought we going to have to trade the truck in on a new one but, fortunately, we had a very good and honest mechanic. He found the problem, pulled the manufacturer's spec sheet on the defect and gave me a copy. The contact points on the rotor cap get damp in wet weather and gradually corrode. About once a year, I take the cap off and clean the contacts with a stiff wire brush and replace. This works two or three times then we replace cap and contacts. The part is only $15 to $20 dollars. It's a great truck. I don't know the horsepower or anything, but I'm sure you can look that up somewhere else. It does go when you need to go though. When you step on it, you can tell quickly that it will give you what you need. Not so super on the ice, but a truck rarely is unless its a 4x4, which mine is not. You can probably get it like that but mine isn't. If you weigh down the back though, it's fine. Decent stock radio. I blew one of the speakers, but I have a tendency to do that, so we won't blame that on the truck.
Story
I don't have a story about the truck. I take it to the store, and I come back home. It runs perfectly to do that. I took it to Milwaukee to a concert and was falling asleep on the way back and could have maybe died but had nothing to do with the truck. There was no wreck or anything.
Pros
For me, it was free, so that is amazing. But outside of that, if I bought it, I would be ok with it. It has enough power to pull trailers and room enough in the cab for a family of four—where two of them are over 6'3. Tires are cool. I can't remember if it came that way or what, but there is a different gas in there. I haven't had to air the tires up since I got it.
Cons
The problem with the brakes is annoying. It's not constant, but they will seize or something and burn through the pad in no time. I replaced them once, and it happened again. Second replacement and we're ok so far.
