In general my truck functions very well. I purchased it used, but it has low mileage for a car of its age. One of the features it has is a tow load button for the transmission that changes the gearing for when you're towing something. I have found that very useful. I have had a few mechanical issues though. The HVAC had some non A/C issues which is the first time I have ever had happen with any car I've owned. The tailgate handle broke off in my hand for no real reason, one of the rear door handles is broken and the passenger pillar trim piece has fallen off too. So I guess I would have to say that the trim on the vehicle leaves something to be desired.
Story
The kids love riding in the bed of the truck! Once, I was towing a beat up flatbed trailer on the farm. I did not connect the chains to the truck frame because I was not leaving the farm and not towing it very far at that. As I crested a hill and stared heading down, I turned my head and watched the trailer pass me and come to a stop under an old cedar tree. Oops!
Pros
The VORTEC V-8 is pretty awesome. There has never been a point where I found the vehicle's power to be insufficient. The truck came with a spray in bed liner that I love! I am so enamored with it that I will always have that feature in any truck that I have in the future. I have done some heavy duty things with my truck, and it has never let me down.
Cons
The rocker panels and wheel wells are rusting out pretty seriously. I have seen this and heard from others that this is a thing for Silverados in that production year range. This may be a little nit-picky, but the break calipers are bolted on with a torx bit bolt which is totally weird for any car and only done by Chevy for a short stretch of production years. The reverse-hinged rear doors are a real pain also. I suppose that if you don't have ore intend on carrying kids then it's not a problem but dropping off kids without someone in the front seat is an issue as is loading them in. Y... (more)

I liked the fact that the tow capability was very large for such an affordable truck. I really was amazed again and again how reliable the truck is. It is surprisingly very safe compared to trucks from older generations. I went from a late eighties Chevy C10 with basic insurance coverage to this comparative 2004 model. The difference in insurance coverage from basic on the older model to the newer model with full comprehensive collision coverage was roughly 20 dollars more per month. It seems this is due to all of the safety standards and antitheft technology on the newer model. I liked the fact that this was equipped with standard manual transmission, manual locking, and standard crank windows. I feel these features add reliability and help in reducing the cost. Even with this base mo... (more)
Story
I used it for ATV hauling and camping trips quite a bit. These were always a good fun time.
Pros
Tow capacity, this two wheel drive, half ton, standard cab, short box has a higher tow capacity than a truck with any of long box, extended cab, or four wheel drive. Thus is due to the overall capacity of the brakes, steering and suspension. A lighter truck with the same brakes and suspension can tow more. The fuel mileage was also better.
Cons
It would have been better if it had an electric rather than a belt driven engine fan. This would have been quieter and had better fuel mileage. I could have converted to the electric type, but I never did. The manual looks and windows were very difficult to reach the passenger side from the drivers side. Overall these were minor complaints, and they are a given for what they are.
