We bought our 2004 Chevy Tahoe in 2010 right before our second child was born. I needed a bigger vehicle to accommodate the second car seat. I had never driven anything bigger than a regular sedan but the thing that sold me on this Tahoe is that it drives like a car but affords the space of an SUV.
Story
I love the space this vehicle affords our family of 5 for taking road trips. Even after 7-8 hours in the car, we're all still comfortable and not too cranky or cramped.
Pros
We have the optional 3rd row seating. We don't use it on a regular basis but I like having that option. The cargo space is large enough to allow me to carry a large cooler with us on our shopping days and still have space for all the other bags of non-cooler groceries. The back seat comfortably fits the 3 car seats that our family now requires. The kids have plenty of space back there for themselves and their toys. We have had very few mechanical problems with this car and we're heading towards 180k miles.
Cons
There have been a few minor problems with this vehicle but we've been able to find out information on the internet to remedy the situation. The first was a problem with the fuel injection system or fuel pump I think. But by changing a chip on the top of the engine, we were able to fix it cheaply and easily ourselves. The other problem we've encountered twice recently (and seems to be common with these vehicles) is that sometime the heater will run even though the controller is set to air conditioning. But the simple fix to that is to pull over, turn the car off for a minute or so. When you... (more)

The Chevrolet Tahoe is an all around great, reliable vehicle. It has a tough build that allows it to go off-roading and a powerful engine that can handle almost anything. The interior is comfortable and flexible. You can seat up to nine people and you can also fold down or remove the rear seats to allow for additional storage space. The interior has also held up fairly well to camping trips, furniture hauling, children, and major use as a sports team vehicle. It has never failed us on the road.
Story
My husband uses it to take himself and his fellow college students on mountain research/collecting expeditions. It has been great for those mountain treks to carry all of their gear, make it up the trails, and even serve as a "tent" on rainy nights. It also has served as bear protection when a bear became a little too interested in the camp site and the campers.
Pros
One of the best things about this vehicle is its powerful engine. It doesn't have any problem going up hills and can take a lot of off-roading abuse. It is still going strong at about 150,000 miles and is still in good shape. Another great feature for the climate we live in is a great air conditioner. It has a great cooling capacity and takes a few minutes to get comfortable as opposed to ten or fifteen minutes in some of our other vehicles we have had. The paint job has also held up really well considering the heat and sun exposure that the vehicle has had.
Cons
One issue with this vehicle is that it is not particularly fuel efficient which is understandable from the year it was made and the size and engine of the vehicle. The other issue we have had is small part repairs in the vehicle that seem to be common defects across the particular make and model of the car. We have had an actuator in the cooling system and an electrical problem with the 12V plug-in ports that were quickly identified when we took them in because they seem to be common problems with the vehicle/make/model.
